This project involved the complete redevelopment of the existing stadium to cater for 25,000 sports fans. Watpac Construction Queensland was the managing contractor for this project. This award winning stadium is home to Australia’s 17th AFL team, the Gold Coast Suns as well as being certified by the IRB, NRL and ICAA to hold a variety of other sporting events if required.
Metricon Stadium is also Australia’s first ‘solar stadium’. The 600 custom made solar panels, each weighing 110 kilograms, were integrated into the roof of the structure around its internal rim and is referred to as the ‘solar halo’. The system generates approximately 20 percent of the stadium's forecast annual energy consumption, enough to provide for the electricity needs of more than 50 Queensland homes.
The stadium hosted the athletic events, and the opening and closing ceremonies for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
In 2012, the stadium received the 'Professional Excellence Award - Commercial Construction $100 million plus' from the Australian Institute of Building (Queensland Chapter) and the award for 'Sporting & Community Services Facilities over $20 million' at the Master Builders Queensland Awards.
