The Hume Global Learning Centre is a new community centre for the Hume City Council in Craigieburn. The Global Learning Centre incorporates the expansion of the Hume Global Learning Village, as well as providing a living community facility with an active street function to enhance the surrounding area and create a prominent landmark and vibrant community destination.
In addition to the core library function, the centre includes a variety of functional areas that accommodate the mobile library service, occasional child care, local history museum, exhibition/gallery spaces, learning spaces, Council offices, customer service and call centre facilities, and meeting and function spaces. The design of the facility is rationalised into three main pavilions – articulated in glass, structural steel framing and canopies, and rammed earth walls – which overlay with the sustainable and functional approach that informs the design.
As Managing Contractor for the works, Watpac was responsible for the planning and delivery phases of the project.
In 2013, the project won the Master Builders Association of Victoria’s Award for 'Excellence in Commercial Buildings $15 million to $20 million', and the national Master Builders Association award in the same category.
The library was named 'International Public Library of the Year' for 2014 by the Danish Agency for Culture.
